Men from the Lancashire Fusiliers based at Fort Hall 1952
October 1952.
British troops were sent to Kenya on the 19th of October 1952 to help deal with the growing Mau Mau uprising. Mau Mau members were travelling around openly throughout the day using pangas (blades) and firearms to attack their victims. Once the British army arrived the Mau Mau were forced out of the towns and into more wooded areas in the hills around Nairobi. Thsi didn t resolve the problem however. The attacks continued and even regular sweeps through the forests with Kenyan trackers failed to dislodge the Mau Mau. In the end despite the rounding up of thousands of suspects it was decided that the only solution was to offer an amnesty to theMau Mau, a move that incensed the white land owners.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a group of brave men from the Lancashire Fusiliers, stationed at Fort Hall in October 1952. During this time, British troops were deployed to Kenya to confront the escalating Mau Mau uprising. The Mau Mau rebels posed a significant threat as they roamed freely throughout the day, armed with pangas and firearms, attacking innocent victims. Upon their arrival, the British army successfully pushed the Mau Mau out of urban areas and into the dense forests surrounding Nairobi. However, despite regular sweeps conducted by Kenyan trackers and thousands of suspects being apprehended, these efforts failed to completely eradicate the insurgency. In an unexpected turn of events that stirred controversy among white landowners, it was ultimately decided that offering amnesty to members of the Mau Mau was necessary for resolving this complex conflict. This decision aimed to bring peace but left many questioning its effectiveness. This photograph serves as a poignant reminder of a tumultuous period marked by civil war and colonialism in 1950s Kenya. It encapsulates not only the courage and resilience displayed by these Lancashire Fusiliers but also sheds light on one chapter in Africa's history that shaped its future trajectory. Preserved through Memory Lane Prints courtesy of Manchester Mirror, this image stands as a testament to those who fought valiantly during times of great turmoil.
