A Great Plaice for Fishing - A Unique Solution to a Pool Problem
EDITORS COMMENTS
. In this print from 1980, we are transported back in time to St Annes on Sea, Lancashire. The picturesque town faced a predicament as their beloved open-air swimming pool was plagued with unsightly algae and dirt just before the new season's commencement on May 10th. However, an ingenious idea emerged that would not only solve the problem but also create an unforgettable spectacle. The brainwave involved filling the large pool with sea water fish known for their appetite for algae. As these diligent underwater cleaners went about their task, locals eagerly awaited the moment when they could witness the fruits of this unconventional solution. And so it happened - when the pool was nearly pristine, enthusiastic fishermen were invited by the Borough of Fylde to empty it using their trusty rods. This remarkable snapshot captures Baths manager Mr George Fitzsimmons taking advantage of his lunch break to indulge in a fishing session within what used to be a swimming paradise. With his waders on and baseball cap shielding him from the sun's rays, he epitomizes both dedication and humor amidst this extraordinary endeavor. This image is not merely about fishing; it encapsulates nostalgia for simpler times when hobbies like angling brought joy and relaxation. It serves as a reminder of how communities can come together creatively to overcome challenges while creating lasting memories along the way.
