EDITORS COMMENTS
On 18 June, 1928, aviation history was made as Amelia Earhart accomplished a groundbreaking feat - becoming the first woman to fly across the treacherous North Atlantic. This print captures the moment when Earhart and her companions departed Burry Point near Llanelli, Carmarthenshire on their journey to Southampton. The daring flight had commenced the previous day from Trepassay Harbor in Newfoundland. Commander Wilmer Stultz skillfully piloted the Fokker F-VIIA-3m aircraft named Friendship, while engineer Lon Gordon provided crucial support. However, it was Amelia herself who navigated for a significant portion of this grueling 20-hour and 40-minute flight. As they soared through rainstorms, dense clouds, and turbulent skies during their perilous crossing, these courageous aviators demonstrated unwavering determination and resilience. Their pioneering spirit paved the way for future generations of women in aviation. This remarkable image not only commemorates an extraordinary achievement but also offers a glimpse into early flight history. It serves as a testament to human ingenuity and showcases the incredible progress made in transportation during that era. Preserved by Mirrorpix's Memory Lane Prints collection, this photograph is a timeless reminder of Amelia Earhart's indomitable spirit and her invaluable contribution to both aviation and gender equality.
