Dolphins in The Thames At Greenwich. A school of between 25

Dolphins in The Thames At Greenwich. A school of between 25 and 30 dolphins were seen swimming upstream with the Thames tide this afternoon (Friday) between Woolwich and Greenwhich. Old sailors at Greenwhich said they had never seen so many dolphins in the Thames before - a pair were sighted near Woolwich last February - and it indicated that the Thames was becoming cleaner. The school swam about in front of the Naval College and the Cutty Sark at Greenwich where the pictures were taken, for about three-quarters of an hour until the sun set. October 1965 P003642

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a remarkable sight that unfolded on the Thames at Greenwich in October 1965. A school of dolphins, numbering between 25 and 30, were spotted swimming upstream with the tide. The presence of these majestic creatures astonished both locals and seasoned sailors alike, who claimed to have never witnessed such an extraordinary spectacle before. The image showcases the dolphins gracefully navigating through the river's waters, their sleek bodies gliding effortlessly against the backdrop of historic landmarks. As they swam near Woolwich and made their way towards Greenwich, it became evident that this rare occurrence symbolized a positive shift in the health of the Thames. The sighting was particularly significant as only a pair had been spotted near Woolwich just months prior. For nearly three-quarters of an hour, this enchanting school captivated onlookers as they playfully frolicked in front of iconic structures like the Naval College and Cutty Sark. With each passing moment until sunset, spectators marveled at nature's beauty unfolding right before their eyes. This photograph from Memory Lane Prints serves as a timeless reminder that even amidst bustling city life, nature finds its way to thrive. It is a testament to London's evolving relationship with its iconic river and stands as evidence that efforts to clean up and preserve our environment can yield remarkable results for both humans and wildlife alike.
