Steel corsets and wigs won t be revived in the new Elizabethan age
Steel corsets and wigs won t be revived in the new Elizabethan age, but some of the prettier fashions-like the Elizabethan ruff-will certainly be copied. For less than ten shillings, you can look like an Elizabethan - in spite of that perm and short skirt-by making yourself a period ruff. Here are instructions for making a ruff you will need: 1/2 yard of white Petersham lin. wide; two hook and eye fasteners; one yard 2in. wide horsehair (on haberdashery counters at 1/4 a yard); one yard yard or remanat of white lace about lin. wide. Cut Petersham to go comfortably round your neck, finish ends and stitch on the fastenings. Sew the lace down one side of the horsehair 1/2in. from the edge. Crinkle the horsehair into pleates until it is the same length as the Petersham. Tack onto Petersham collar, keeping horsehair level with top edge. in the picture London actress Jene Anderson demonstrates the " ruff look." March 1952 P008687

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this print from March 1952, we catch a glimpse of the new Elizabethan age. Gone are the days of steel corsets and wigs, but some of the more elegant fashion choices have certainly made a comeback. The iconic Elizabethan ruff takes center stage as London actress Jene Anderson flawlessly demonstrates its timeless allure. For those yearning to embrace this regal style without breaking the bank, instructions for creating your own period ruff are provided. With just half a yard of white Petersham linen, two hook and eye fasteners, one yard of 2-inch wide horsehair (readily available at haberdashery counters), and a remnant or yard of white lace measuring approximately 1 inch wide, you can transform yourself into an Elizabethan beauty for less than ten shillings. Begin by cutting the Petersham to comfortably fit around your neck and secure it with neatly finished ends and stitched-on fastenings. Sew the lace along one side of the horsehair about half an inch from the edge. Then crinkle or pleat the horsehair until it matches in length with the Petersham collar. Tack it onto the collar while ensuring that both materials align perfectly. With these simple steps, anyone can achieve an authentic Elizabethan look reminiscent of centuries past - even if they sport modern hairstyles like perms or don trendy short skirts! So why not indulge in a touch of history? Embrace elegance with your very own handmade ruff inspired by this delightful photograph captured by Mirrorpix on Memory Lane Prints.
