Police bring the curtain down on The Buskers. Busker Don Crown
Police bring the curtain down on The Buskers. Busker Don Crowns act was in full swing. He played six harmonicas while his son Matthew tooted a horn and a bunch of colourful budgies chirped an accompaniment. Passers-by stopped to watch their show on a street-corner pitch in Londons Holborn-circus. And one kind lady gave six-year-old Matthew a £ 1 note. Then a policeman came along and said that the lad was too young for that sort of thing and he asked them to accompany him to the police station. But it all ended on a happy note. Don, 25, of Barkingside, Essex, was given a warning...and the troupers were sent on their way. Busker Don Crown and son Matthew. May 1969 P018605

EDITORS COMMENTS
Police bring the curtain down on The Buskers, but the show goes on with a happy ending! In this print from May 1969, we witness the vibrant street performance of busker Don Crown and his talented son Matthew. As Don's act reaches its peak, he skillfully plays six harmonicas while young Matthew adds to the melody with his horn. A delightful bunch of colorful budgies chirp along in perfect harmony, capturing the attention of passers-by in London's Holborn-circus. The heartwarming scene takes an unexpected turn when a kind lady rewards little Matthew with a generous £1 note. However, their joy is short-lived as a policeman intervenes, claiming that Matthew is too young for such activities. Concerned for their well-being, he escorts them to the nearby police station. Fortunately, fate smiles upon this musical duo as they are met with understanding and compassion at the station. Despite receiving a warning about regulations regarding child performers, Don and Matthew are allowed to continue spreading joy through their music. This remarkable snapshot captures not only an enchanting moment in time but also reflects upon themes of family bonds and childhood innocence amidst bustling city life. It serves as a reminder that even though challenges may arise unexpectedly, determination and love will always prevail.
