Ever since Ivor Sherlock aged 13 years of Boreham Wood Hertfordshire
Ever since Ivor Sherlock aged 13 years of Boreham Wood Hertfordshire, took Sam a few weeks old grey squirrel from the Dray a disused magpies nest, which had been converted and lined with moss and straw, he has had lots of fun, and some worries too. Ivor learned that mother squirrel had been captured so he went to the hawthorn bush and just in case with gloved hand he pulled out Sam, a puny thing with the fur just starting to grow. He fed it with warm milk from a spoon and then biscuits, fruit and later prepared nuts. Today 6 months after, they are on the best of terms and although Sam has got a large cage and a den, it is quite free when Ivor is around to roam the garden, trees and the house. It has never attempted to escape. Sam has a terrific appetite and eats the queerest things for a squirrel, for instance he loves warm tea and usually steals a piece of cake from my mouth but chocolate biscuits is his real favourite." At tea table, Sam leaps and tries Ivors tea. September 1952. September 1952 C4370

EDITORS COMMENTS
Ever since Ivor Sherlock rescued a few weeks old grey squirrel named Sam from an abandoned magpie's nest, their bond has grown stronger each day. Living in Boreham Wood, Hertfordshire, Ivor took on the responsibility of caring for Sam after learning that his mother had been captured. With gentle hands and a heart full of compassion, Ivor nurtured Sam back to health. From feeding him warm milk with a spoon to introducing him to biscuits, fruit, and later prepared nuts, Ivor watched as Sam grew into a healthy and mischievous squirrel. Now six months later, they have become inseparable companions. Although Sam has his own spacious cage and den, he is free to explore the garden, trees, and even the house when Ivor is around. What makes Sam truly unique is his unusual taste preferences for a squirrel. He adores warm tea and can't resist stealing bits of cake right out of people's mouths! But above all else, chocolate biscuits hold a special place in his heart. In this photo taken in September 1952 by Mirrorpix from Memory Lane Prints (not affiliated with any commercial use), we see the delightful moment where Sam playfully leaps towards Ivor's tea during their daily tea time ritual. Their friendship serves as a reminder that love knows no bounds – not even between species.
