Attire Cane Chief Exile Fours Helena Outfit Socks Wars Zulu Zululand

EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking portrait captures the regal presence of Zulu Chief Dinuzulu kaCetshwayo, who ruled over the Zulu people from 1884 until his exile in 1890. Dinuzulu, born in 1868, became king following the death of his father, King Cetshwayo, during the Anglo-Zulu War of 1879. His reign was marked by continued conflict with European colonial powers, leading to his eventual exile to the island of St. Helena for seven years. Dinuzulu's traditional Zulu attire is on full display in this photograph, taken around 1896. He wears a colorful outfit made of animal skins, adorned with intricate beadwork and feathers. The chief holds a cane, a symbol of his authority, and wears socks with four-pointed toes, a distinctive feature of Zulu footwear. Despite the hardships of exile, Dinuzulu remained a powerful figure in Zulu society. He continued to lead his people in spirit, and when he was finally allowed to return to Zululand in 1897, he was greeted with great enthusiasm. Dinuzulu's legacy as a warrior king and a leader who fought to preserve Zulu culture and traditions continues to be celebrated in South Africa and beyond. This photograph is a testament to his enduring influence and the rich history of the Zulu people.
