EDITORS COMMENTS
This powerful recruitment poster, printed by A Thom and Company in Dublin in 1915, features a poignant appeal from the 2nd Battalion Royal Irish Regiment serving in the trenches of World War I. The image shows a group of soldiers gathered around their chaplain, Father Fitzmaurice, after Mass on the first Sunday in Advent. The soldiers, all wearing the green uniform of the Irish Regiment, have passed a resolution to uphold the reputation and fine traditions of their regiment, which was started by Irishmen and is now being defended by them on the battlefield. The text of the resolution, signed by Lieutenant-Colonel W Dugan, is displayed prominently in bold, patriotic lettering, urging Irishmen at home to answer the call and join their brothers in the ranks. The soldiers' determination and unwavering commitment to their cause is palpable, making this poster a powerful symbol of the patriotism and sacrifice of the Irish regiments during the war.
