Photograph showing the pitch of the Marylebone Cricket Ground (Lord s), during the grounds use as a farm for rearing geese in World War I. EDITORS COMMENTS
During the turbulent times of World War I, the hallowed grounds of Lord's Cricket Ground in London were repurposed from hosting thrilling matches to serving a more practical purpose. In this photograph from 1915, the pitch of the iconic Marylebone Cricket Ground is transformed into a goose farm. With only five geese visible on the cricket square, it is evident that the majority of the fowl were kept at the Nursery end of the ground, which is visible in the background. The caption reads, "The Close of the Innings: 'Fielders returning to the pavilion'" - a poignant reminder of the cricket matches that once took place on this revered turf. The city's most prestigious cricket club, MCC (Marylebone Cricket Club), had to make sacrifices during the war effort, and the grounds were used for rearing geese and poultry to provide meat for the British army and civilians. This historical image offers a unique glimpse into the adaptability and resilience of the people during wartime, as they found creative ways to use resources to support the war effort.
