EDITORS COMMENTS
September 1916: A Milestone in Keighley's Industrial History - Women Munitions Workers at the National Shell Factory In this evocative photograph from the archives, we witness a pivotal moment in the history of Keighley, Yorkshire, during the First World War. On the 23rd of September 1916, the West Riding Volunteer Regiment organized a flag day and procession to raise funds for the war effort. Among the various floats and tableaux that graced the occasion was an attractive display by the Keighley National Shell Factory. The tableaux featured a group of munitions workers, dressed in Khaki uniforms, diligently working on a lathe. The signs on the float read, "Keighley Made Shells," "Made on Keighley Made Machines," "Britain's Equivalent to the Famous French 75mm Shell," "The 18-Pounder Shell," and "We are Hoping one of these presents from Keighley will hit the Kaiser in the Tummy." The National Shell Factory in Keighley, located at Eagle Mills, Dalton Lane, had been in operation since 1915. This photograph captures the spirit of the women munitions workers who played a crucial role in the production of vital war supplies. Their dedication and hard work were a testament to the indomitable spirit of the community during the trying times of the war. This photograph is a poignant reminder of the significant contribution made by the people of Keighley to the war effort and the industrial prowess of the region during the First World War.
