EDITORS COMMENTS
1. Title: "Sir William Webb Follett: A Prominent Statesman and Legal Figure of 19th Century Britain" Sir William Webb Follett (1798-1845) was a distinguished figure in 19th century British politics and law. Born in Exeter, Follett began his career as a Member of Parliament (MP) for his native city in 1832, representing the Whig Party. His political acumen and commitment to public service quickly earned him recognition and respect in the House of Commons. In 1834, Follett was appointed as the Solicitor-General for England and Wales, a position that marked the beginning of his legal career in the government. Two years later, he was promoted to the post of Attorney-General, a role that placed him at the pinnacle of the English legal system. As Attorney-General, Follett played a pivotal role in several high-profile cases, demonstrating his exceptional legal expertise and dedication to upholding the rule of law. He was known for his eloquence and persuasive arguments in the courtroom, making him a formidable opponent in legal debates. Follett's tenure as Attorney-General was marked by his commitment to social justice and the welfare of the common people. He advocated for reforms aimed at improving the lives of the working class, such as the Factory Act of 1833, which set limits on working hours for children and women in factories. In 1841, Follett was knighted for his services to the law and the state. Tragically, he passed away just four years later, at the age of 47, leaving behind a lasting legacy as a dedicated public servant and a champion of social justice. This photograph captures the image of a man who dedicated his life to the betterment of his community and the pursuit of justice, making Sir William Webb Follett an enduring symbol of 19th century British history.
