1892 Episcopal Harrison Militar Ninth Presidency Universal Whig

EDITORS COMMENTS
William Henry Harrison (1773-1841): The Nineteenth Century's Nineteenth President This engraving, published in The Universal History in 1892, showcases William Henry Harrison, the ninth President of the United States. Born on February 20, 1773, in Charles City County, Virginia, Harrison was a prominent figure in American politics and military history. Harrison's military career began at a young age, and he rose to the rank of brevet major general in the United States Army during the Northwest Indian War. He later served as the Governor of the Indiana Territory and was a key figure in the Whig Party, which opposed the policies of the Democratic Party. In the portrait, Harrison is depicted seated in a well-appointed room, dressed in the fashion of the early nineteenth century. He wears a military uniform, complete with a coat, hat, and epaulets, reflecting his military background. The interior of the room is adorned with ornate furnishings and a large, ornate chair, adding to the sense of grandeur. At the time this portrait was created, Harrison was in his late sixties, making him the oldest President to be elected at the time. Tragically, he served the shortest presidency in American history, as he contracted pneumonia just a month after his inauguration and passed away on April 4, 1841. Despite his brief tenure, Harrison's legacy as a military hero and early proponent of states' rights and expansionism left a lasting impact on American history. This engraving serves as a poignant reminder of a pivotal figure in American politics and military history.
