EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the spirit of a traditional Whit Walk procession in the historic town of Hurst, Ashton-under-Lyne, Manchester. Dating back to the 17th century, Whit Walks were an annual event held in many English towns and villages to celebrate the feast day of Saint Whit, or St. William of York. The custom involved decorating the town with flowers, banners, and greenery, and parading through the streets in colorful processions, often led by a maypole and a maypole bearer. In this image, taken circa 1903, we see a terraced street in Hurst filled with people dressed in their Sunday best, gathered to take part in the Whit Walk. The men wear flat caps and suits, while the women and children don their finest dresses and bonnets. The street is adorned with bunting and garlands of flowers, creating a festive atmosphere. At the head of the procession, a maypole bearer carries the maypole aloft, surrounded by a group of young girls in white dresses, holding hands and dancing around it in a circle. Behind them, a crowd of people follow, some carrying banners and others waving handkerchiefs. The houses on either side of the street are adorned with flowers and greenery, adding to the sense of celebration and community. This photograph offers a glimpse into the past, transporting us back to a time when such communal events brought people together to celebrate their shared heritage and traditions. The Whit Walks in Hurst, Ashton-under-Lyne, remain an important part of the town's history and continue to be celebrated to this day.
