This exquisite watercolor painting depicts the Weinmannia sylvicola, also known as the Tawhero tree, an angiosperm discovered during Captain James Cook's first voyage across the Pacific Ocean between 1768 and 1771. The illustration was created by James Miller based on an original outline drawing made by Sydney Parkinson during the voyage. The Tawhero tree is a native to New Zealand and Australia, and is a member of the Cunoniaceae family, order Oxalidales, and class Magnoliophyta. It is an eudicot, specifically belonging to the rosid clade, and is characterized by its distinctive flower structure and dicotyledonous leaves. The painting captures the tree in all its glory, with its intricately detailed leaves and branches, and the delicate flowers that bloom at the tips.
