EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the harsh realities of war life on the Western Front during World War One. Taken in Mericourt, France, in 1918, the image shows horse-drawn wagons drawing up at a railhead to load their supplies of rations from covered railway wagons. The soldiers, dressed in heavy coats and hats, work diligently to transfer the provisions from one mode of transport to another. The railhead, a vital logistical hub, enabled the efficient distribution of essential supplies to the front line troops, who were often situated many miles away from the rail network. The use of horse-drawn wagons was necessary due to the poor condition of the roads and the limited availability of motorized transport. The photograph is part of a collection of 253 images, compiled by Charles William Stulpnagel, who served as a British Army officer during the war. This poignant image provides a glimpse into the challenging conditions faced by soldiers on the Western Front and the vital role that logistics played in sustaining them during this pivotal period in world history.
