1826 Carpenter Charlotte Scott Walter

EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative portrait captures the enchanting likeness of Charlotte Mary Carpenter, later known as Lady Scott, the beloved wife of the renowned Scottish poet and novelist, Sir Walter Scott. Born in 1761 in Edinburgh, Scotland, Charlotte was the daughter of a prosperous merchant, John Carpenter. She married Sir Walter in 1788, and their union was celebrated not only for its deep affection but also for its intellectual compatibility. Sir Walter Scott was a man of immense literary talent, and his works, such as "Waverley," "Ivanhoe," and "Rob Roy," brought him international acclaim. Charlotte, who was known for her intelligence, wit, and grace, served as an inspiration for many of his literary creations. She was the model for the character of Rebecca in "Ivanhoe," and her likeness is said to have influenced the descriptions of several other characters in his novels. The couple's marriage was marked by a deep and enduring love, and they shared a passion for literature, history, and the arts. They had six children together, and Charlotte played an essential role in managing their large household and supporting her husband's literary pursuits. Tragically, Charlotte's life was cut short when she passed away in 1826, at the age of 65. Sir Walter was devastated by her loss and was unable to write for several months. This poignant portrait, taken around the time of her death, serves as a poignant reminder of the extraordinary woman who shared her life with one of the greatest literary figures in history. This image, a testament to the beauty and intelligence of Charlotte Mary Carpenter, Lady Scott, is a precious historical artifact that offers a glimpse into the life of a remarkable woman and her legendary husband.
