EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the simple yet significant setting of the small apartment at 21 Rue des Bruyères in Paris, where Vladimir Lenin (1870-1924), the Russian communist leader, lived during his second exile from Russia between 1902 and 1904. Lenin, born as Vladimir Ilyich Ulyanov, spent these years in political exile after being sentenced to hard labor in Siberia following his involvement in the failed revolution of 1898. During his time in Paris, Lenin wrote extensively, producing works such as The Development of Capitalism in Russia and What Is To Be Done? This period was pivotal in shaping Lenin's political thought and cementing his role as a leading figure in the Russian Social Democratic Labour Party. In her autobiography, Memories of Lenin, Lenin's wife, Nadezhda Krupskaya (1869-1939), recalls their time in Paris, describing their cramped living conditions and Lenin's relentless dedication to his work. "We lived in a small, dark, and damp room," she wrote. "Lenin worked from morning till night, and I did my best to help him." Lenin himself reflected on his time in Paris in his book, The Infantile Sickness of Leftism in Communism, where he criticized the leftist tendencies within the socialist movement. "The left wing of the Social-Democratic Party," he wrote, "has been suffering from an infantile disorder, which I propose to call the infantile sickness." These extracts offer a glimpse into the formative years of one of the most influential political figures of the 20th century, providing context to the historical significance of this unassuming apartment in Paris.
