EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative print by Pizer captures the grandeur and excitement of The Victory Ball, held at the iconic Albert Hall in London in 1918 to celebrate the end of the First World War. With the sale of 4000 tickets, the cream of British society came together to raise funds for the Nations Fund for Nurses, an organization dedicated to supporting the brave men and women who had dedicated their lives to caring for the wounded and sick during the war. The highlight of the evening was an elaborate procession of costumed society ladies, each representing a different Allied nation or symbol of peace. Heading the procession was Lady Diana Manners, later Cooper, dressed magnificently as Britannia, the goddess of Britain. The elegance and sophistication of the attendees, their opulent costumes, and the grandeur of the Albert Hall created an unforgettable atmosphere, as the nation came together to celebrate the end of a long and devastating conflict. The Victory Ball was a symbol of hope and renewal, a testament to the resilience and determination of the British people, and a reminder of the sacrifices made by so many during the war. This print, with its intricate details and vibrant colors, transports us back to that magical evening, allowing us to relive the spirit of unity and joy that marked the end of the First World War.
