This enchanting mid-19th century photograph captures a delightful assembly of various squirrel species, showcasing their unique characteristics and charm. The American Black Squirrel, with its glossy, dark fur, stands proudly at the center. To its left, the Ariel Petaurus, also known as the Feathertail Glider, displays its distinctive bushy tail and membranous skin that allows it to glide through the forest. Adjacent to the Ariel Petaurus, a Squirrel-like Petaurus, or the Stripe-faced Dunnart, peeks out from behind a leaf, its striped face and small size contrasting with the other larger squirrels. The Lesser American Flying Squirrel, with its lighter fur and larger eyes, perches on a branch, ready to leap and glide through the air. The Grey Squirrel, a common sight in many parts of the world, is seen munching on an acorn, while the Common British Squirrel, or Red Squirrel, sits atop a tree trunk, its bushy tail curled around it. Lastly, the Agile Antechinus, or Agiump, a marsupial squirrel from Australia, is shown with its sharp claws and pointed snout.
