EDITORS COMMENTS
This artwork by the renowned Dutch naturalist artist JG Keulemans, featured in Sir Walter Lawry Buller's "A History of the Birds of New Zealand," Vol.1, Plate 5, dates back to 1888. The illustration showcases various Petroica species native to New Zealand's North and South Islands. The South Island Tomtit, also known as Ngirungiru or Petroica (Petroica) macrocephala macrocephala, is depicted in the upper left corner, with its distinctive black and white plumage and a bright red bill and legs. The South Island Robin, or Kakarikiwai, Petroica (miro) australis australis, is illustrated in the lower left corner. This species is characterized by its olive-green back, orange-red underparts, and a yellow bill and legs. On the right side of the plate, the North Island Tomtit, or Miromiro, Petroica (Petroica) macrocephala toitoi, is shown. This small, olive-green bird features a black face mask, white underparts, and a yellow bill and legs. The North Island Robin, or Toutouwai, Petroica (miro) longipes, is illustrated in the upper right corner. This species is easily recognized by its distinctive black and white striped head, orange-red underparts, and a long, curved bill. Keulemans' meticulous watercolor painting captures the intricate details and vibrant colors of these fascinating birds, providing a window into the natural history of New Zealand. This artwork is a testament to the rich biodiversity of the region and the importance of documenting and preserving the natural world.
