Autumn 1917 at Quex Park: A Glimpse into the Daily Life of a VAD Hospital This evocative photograph captures a moment in time at the Quex Park Voluntary Aid Detachment (VAD) Hospital in Birchington-on-Sea, during the autumn of 1917. Seated in the centre of the front row, we find Major Percy HG Powell-Cotton, his wife Hannah B (Mrs HB) Powell-Cotton, and Dr Worthington. To their left are Fanny and Dora Watson. In the centre row, Jack Hedge, the Hospital Masseur, is seen on the first right, followed by James Cornford, the Head Gardener, on the second right. Fifth right is Camille Van Dyck, an Hospital Orderly. In the back row, we find Mary Marlowe on the first left. The Quex Park VAD Hospital opened on 15 October 1914 and closed on 31 January 1919. Run by Kent/178, the Birchington Detachment, it was under the command of Hannah Powell-Cotton, the wife of Major Percy HG Powell-Cotton, who was also the founder of the Powell-Cotton Museum. The hospital provided essential care for the wounded soldiers during World War I. This photograph offers a rare glimpse into the daily life of the hospital staff and domestic workers, who played a crucial role in the recovery of the soldiers. Their dedication and hard work ensured that the soldiers received the best possible care during their time at the Quex Park VAD Hospital.
