1878 Cylindrical Ferrol Obelisk Towing January

EDITORS COMMENTS
This engraving captures an historic moment in maritime and cultural history, as the steam tug Anglia tows the obelisk ship Cleopatra off the coast of Ferrol, Spain, in January 1878. The Cleopatra was an extraordinary vessel, built specifically to transport the ancient Egyptian obelisk of the same name from its origin in Egypt to its new home in London. The obelisk, which stands at over 21 meters tall and weighs around 100 tons, was an impressive sight as it sat atop the cylindrical, 70-meter long ship. The Cleopatra was itself an engineering marvel, with a shallow draft and a unique design that allowed it to navigate the narrow and shallow waters of the Nile River in Egypt and the Thames River in London. The steam tug Anglia, on the left of the image, provided the necessary power to tow the Cleopatra across the Atlantic Ocean. The tow line can be seen stretching between the two vessels, as the Anglia carefully guides the Cleopatra through the waves off the coast of Ferrol. The journey from Egypt to London was a long and complex one, with the Cleopatra facing numerous challenges along the way. The obelisk had to be carefully secured during the voyage, and the ship had to navigate through various ports and waterways. But with the help of the Anglia and other support vessels, the Cleopatra finally arrived in London in July 1878, where it was greeted with great fanfare and excitement. Today, the Cleopatra's obelisk stands proudly in the heart of London's Embankment Gardens, a testament to the ingenuity and determination of those who made its transportation possible. This engraving provides a fascinating glimpse into the past, showcasing the remarkable collaboration between maritime technology and ancient history.
