EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite handcolored copperplate stipple engraving, taken from Frederic Cuvier's Dictionary of Natural Science: Mammals, published in Paris, France, in 1816, showcases three intriguing mammalian species: the Tufted Capuchin monkey (Sapajus apella), Senegal Bushbaby (Galago senegalensis), and the Spectral Tarsier (Tarsius tarsier). The illustration was produced under the artistic direction of Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin, with the engraving executed by Massard. The painter of natural history responsible for this masterpiece was Jean Gabriel Pretre, who later became an artist to the Museum of Natural History. The Tufted Capuchin monkey, native to Central and South America, is depicted in the center of the image, its expressive face and bushy tail evident. To its left, the Senegal Bushbaby, native to Africa, is shown in a dynamic pose, clinging to a tree branch with its prehensile tail and gazing intently at the viewer. The Spectral Tarsier, native to Southeast Asia, is depicted on the right, its large eyes and elongated limbs making it appear almost ethereal. It is important to note that the Spectral Tarsier is currently considered a vulnerable species due to habitat loss and fragmentation. This beautiful engraving serves as a reminder of the importance of preserving the natural world and its diverse inhabitants. The intricate detail and lifelike quality of this handcolored copperplate stipple engraving are a testament to the skill and artistry of the artists and craftsmen involved in its creation.
