EDITORS COMMENTS
Step into the magical world of Paul M. Potter's captivating illustration for the promotional Christmas card of George Du Maurier's beloved novel "Trilby" (1894). This enchanting image invites us to the Haymarket Theatre production of the play, first performed in England on October 30, 1895. The theatrical scene comes alive with the pun on "Tree," a nod to Herbert Beerbohm Tree, the renowned actor-manager who brought Svengali to life on stage. Tree's production of "Trilby" was not his first encounter with the play; he had previously seen it performed in Boston in March 1895. The 1890s were an era of popular entertainment, and "Trilby" was no exception. With its blend of mystery, romance, and the supernatural, the play became a sensation, drawing audiences to the theatre in droves. Potter's illustration captures the essence of the pantomime, with its intriguing characters and mesmerizing atmosphere. Svengali, the hypnotic and enigmatic gypsy sorcerer, stands center stage, his eyes fixed on the young Trilby, who gazes back at him with a mixture of fear and fascination. The stage is set with an ornate tree, adorned with twinkling lights, symbolizing the Christmas season and the magic of the theatre. This exquisite promotional Christmas card is a testament to the enduring appeal of "Trilby" and the power of the theatre to captivate and enchant us. As we gaze upon Potter's illustration, we are transported to a world of wonder and enchantment, where the magic of the stage comes alive.
