EDITORS COMMENTS
On the Trail with the Louse Patrol: A Snapshot of Life in the 1st Northumbrian Field Ambulance during World War I This evocative photograph, titled 'On the trail with the Louse Patrol. Somewhere in France,' transports us back to the trenches of the Western Front during World War I. The image captures Acting Sergeant Herbert Gibson, MM, of the 1st Northumbrian Field Ambulance, Royal Army Medical Corps, as he leads a team of soldiers on a mission to eradicate lice from their living quarters. Born in September 1889, Gibson and his men were part of the British Expeditionary Force that arrived in France in 1914 to defend against the German invasion. The 1st Northumbrian Field Ambulance was responsible for providing medical assistance to wounded soldiers on the battlefield and in the field hospitals. However, the soldiers' living conditions were far from ideal, and the prevalence of lice was a constant concern. The tiny insects not only caused discomfort and itching but also spread diseases such as typhus and trench fever. In this photograph, Gibson and his team are seen carrying large tin basins, likely filled with hot water and lye soap, which they used to wash down their living quarters and themselves. The soldiers wear various uniforms, some with insignia from different regiments, reflecting the diverse makeup of the British Army during the war. This image offers a rare glimpse into the daily life of soldiers during World War I, highlighting the hardships they faced and the camaraderie that helped them endure. It is a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by the men and women who served during this pivotal time in history.
