EDITORS COMMENTS
This engraving is an illustration for the chapter "Visita a ima. Qu cos y m x9929; cos" (Bloodletting) from the work "Sue morales, visiones y visitas de Torres con D. Francisco de Quevedo por Madrid" (Moral visions and visits of Torres with Don Francisco de Quevedo in Madrid) by Diego de Torres Villarroel. Born in 1693 in Spain, Torres Villarroel was a prolific writer, poet, dramatist, astrologer, doctor, mathematician, priest, and professor of the University of Salamanca. In this work, he collaborated with the renowned Spanish Baroque writer Francisco de Quevedo. The chapter "Bloodletting" is a critique of the medical profession and is depicted in this illustration. The image shows a woman lying on a bed, with a doctor in traditional attire standing beside her, holding a leeching cup. The woman's expression suggests fear and discomfort, while the doctor appears calm and detached. Above them, a vision appears in the form of a winged figure, holding a balance and a mortar and pestle, symbolizing the balance between health and sickness and the preparation of medicines. This engraving is a visual representation of the text's content, which explores the themes of health, medicine, and the role of doctors in society. Torres Villarroel's collaboration with Quevedo resulted in a thought-provoking and satirical work that challenged the medical profession of the time. The illustration adds depth to the text by providing a visual complement to the written word. This engraving is part of the collection of the Biblioteca de Catalunya (National Library of Catalonia) in Barcelona, Spain. It is a valuable historical artifact that sheds light on the literary and artistic production of the time and the critical perspective towards the medical profession during the Baroque period.
