EDITORS COMMENTS
North American SNJ-4 Texan N101X, registration number 88-9450 and former identification number 09935, is seen parked at Midland Airport during the Confederate Air Force's (CAF) annual open house and airshow on October 8-10, 1992. This iconic North American T-6 Texan trainer aircraft, manufactured by North American Aviation in 1945, was a mainstay of the United States military training fleet for over four decades. With its distinctive rounded canopy and distinctive checkerboard pattern, the Texan was a familiar sight at military bases across North America. Retired from military service, this particular Texan, now owned by the Confederate Air Force, was preserved and restored to its former glory. The CAF is a non-profit organization dedicated to the preservation of historic military aircraft and the education of the public about their history and significance. Through events like the annual open house and airshow at Midland Airport, the CAF provides an opportunity for the public to get up close and personal with these historic aircraft and even take flights in some of them. The Texan, also known as the SNJ-4 in military service, was a versatile aircraft that saw use not only as a trainer but also in various roles such as liaison, observation, and light attack. Its powerful Wright R-1340-AN-1 engine provided the power needed for both training missions and combat operations. With its distinctive warbird appearance and rich history, the Texan remains a favorite among aviation enthusiasts and a symbol of the golden age of military aviation.
