EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph features the de Havilland DH.100 Vampire FB.52 MM6156 proudly displayed on a plinth outside the 32 Stormo Head-Quarters at Amendola Air Base in Italy, on the 23rd of March, 1999. The Vampire, a iconic British post-war fighter aircraft, is believed to be a combination of several different aircraft, with elements from MM.6024, 6042, 6083, and 6125. The Vampire, a twin-engine, transonic jet-powered fighter, was first introduced in 1945 and served in the Royal Air Force and several other air forces around the world until the late 1980s. The FB.52 variant, which was the final production version, was equipped with wingtip fuel tanks and a revised canopy, increasing its combat range and improving the pilot's visibility. This photograph captures the essence of aviation history and the enduring legacy of the de Havilland Vampire. The aircraft's sleek design, powerful engines, and advanced technology were once at the forefront of military aviation, and it continues to be a source of fascination for aviation enthusiasts and historians alike. The Vampire's presence outside the 32 Stormo Head-Quarters at Amendola Air Base in Italy is a testament to its international impact and the enduring bond between Italy and the United Kingdom in military aviation. This photograph is a must-have for any aviation enthusiast, transport or aeronautical collection, and a reminder of the rich history of military aviation.
