This evocative photograph captures the Canadian Car and Foundry T-6J Texan aircraft (1774, msn CCF4-486, ex 52-8565) on display at the Museu do Ar in Montijo, Portugal (BA.6, IZZ-LPMT) around the turn of the millennium. The T-6J Texan is a military variant of the North American T-6 trainer aircraft, manufactured by Canadian Car and Foundry Limited between 1953 and 1954. The T-6J was a significant development from its predecessor, the T-33 Silver Star, and was used extensively by the Royal Canadian Air Force and other air forces around the world for pilot training. The T-6J in this image bears the markings of the Portuguese Air Force, having been imported from Canada in the late 1950s. The aircraft remained in service until its tragic end on May 18, 2003, when it crashed during a flight, taking the lives of both crew members. Despite this sad chapter in its history, the T-6J Texan continues to be a symbol of aviation history and the important role that training aircraft play in shaping the careers of pilots and aircrew. The T-6J Texan is a testament to the enduring legacy of Canadian Car and Foundry's contributions to the aviation industry.
