EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photograph from the SBAC Farnborough Airshow held between the 5th and 12th of September 1990, the colossal Antonov An-225 Mriya, registration number SSSR-82060 (msn 01-01), takes center stage. This awe-inspiring aircraft, manufactured by the Antonov Design Bureau in the Soviet Union, is the world's largest production aircraft by volume and the heaviest aircraft ever built that can take off and land conventionally. The Antonov An-225 Mriya, which translates to "Dream" in Ukrainian, was designed primarily as a strategic airlift cargo aircraft, capable of transporting large and oversized payloads, including spacecraft and military equipment. In this image, the Mriya is still adorned with the Paris Air Show serial number 387, which it bore during its appearance at the prestigious event earlier that year. The Antonov An-225 made its first flight on December 21, 1988, and was initially developed for the Soviet space program to transport the Buran spacecraft. With a wingspan of 88.4 meters (289.9 feet) and a length of 74.4 meters (243.7 feet), the Mriya dwarfs most other aircraft in its class. Its six turbofan engines generate an impressive 182,000 kg (399,000 lbs) of thrust, enabling the aircraft to carry a maximum payload of 150,000 kg (330,000 lbs) and fly at a cruising speed of 850 km/h (528 mph). This photograph captures the Mriya's majestic presence at the Farnborough Airshow, where it undoubtedly left a lasting impression on the thousands of aviation enthusiasts and industry professionals in attendance. The Antonov An-225 Mriya remains an engineering marvel and a testament to the ingenuity and innovation of its designers and builders.
