EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, taken on the 5th of July 1892, captures a mesmerizing display of Thomson's Gazelles (Eudorcas thomsonii) in the Lower Mammal Gallery of the Natural History Museum in London. The Victorian-era Waterhouse Building, a historical landmark and home to the museum's collection, houses this remarkable exhibit. Thomson's Gazelles, also known as Thomson's gazelles or Thomson's gazelle, are a species of antelope belonging to the family Bovidae and the subfamily Antilopinae. They are characterized by their slender build, with males reaching up to 70 cm at the shoulder and females slightly smaller. Their coat is a reddish-brown color, with white underparts and a white ring around their eyes, making them a striking sight in their natural habitat. The Thomson's Gazelles in this photograph are preserved as a placental mammal, a group of mammals that develop from an embryo inside the mother's body and are born alive, rather than laying eggs. This classification, along with their even-toed ungulate status, places them within the order Artiodactyla. The Natural History Museum's collection, established in the mid-19th century, has long been a source of fascination and knowledge for scientists, researchers, and the general public. This photograph, taken over a century ago, offers a glimpse into the past, showcasing the museum's dedication to preserving and showcasing the natural world. The Thomson's Gazelles in this photograph are a testament to the rich history and significance of the Natural History Museum, providing a connection to the past and inspiring curiosity and wonder about the natural world. This image, with its historical context and scientific importance, is a valuable addition to any collection or display.
