EDITORS COMMENTS
The Tempio Malatestiano, or Malatesta Temple, is a remarkable cathedral church located in the heart of Rimini, Italy, in the region of Romagna. This architectural marvel, which dates back to the 15th century, serves as the city's most significant religious monument and a testament to the artistic and architectural prowess of the Malatesta family. The Tempio Malatestiano was commissioned by Sigismondo Malatesta, a powerful condottiere and ruler of Rimini, and designed by Leon Battista Alberti, a renowned architect and humanist scholar of the time. The temple's construction began in 1450 and was intended to be a grandiose mausoleum for the Malatesta family. The upper part of the facade, which was planned to include a gable end, was never completed, leaving the temple with its distinctive incomplete appearance. The temple's exterior is adorned with intricate marble decorations, reflecting the wealth and power of the Malatesta family. The interior is equally impressive, featuring a nave and two aisles, with a magnificent dome and a beautiful fresco cycle by the painter Piero della Francesca. The frescoes depict scenes from the Old Testament and the life of Sigismondo Malatesta, highlighting the family's connection to the biblical past and their divine right to rule. The Tempio Malatestiano is an essential piece of Italian architectural history, showcasing the fusion of classical and Renaissance styles. Its incomplete facade serves as a reminder of the complexities of the past and the ever-evolving nature of artistic and architectural endeavors. This photograph, taken in 1903, captures the temple's timeless beauty and the enduring allure of Rimini's rich history.
