EDITORS COMMENTS
This image graces the cover of Tatler magazine's October 13, 1909 issue, featuring the enchanting Lady de Bathe, otherwise known as Lillie Langtry. Born on October 13, 1853, on the Isle of Jersey in the Channel Islands, Langtry was the daughter of the dean of Jersey. In 1874, she married Edward Langtry, who passed away in 1897. Seven years later, in 1899, she wed Hugo de Bathe, who was later knighted as a baronet in 1907. Langtry made headlines in 1881 by becoming the first society woman to grace the stage, making her debut at the prestigious Haymarket Theatre in London. Her striking beauty and magnetic stage presence earned her a successful acting career. In addition to her theatrical pursuits, Langtry also managed a thriving racing stable at Newmarket. A true beauty of her time, Lady de Bathe captivated many distinguished admirers, including the future King Edward VII, who was also known for his appreciation for the fairer sex. This portrait, taken in 1909, showcases the glamour and elegance of a bygone era, transporting us back to the opulence and allure of the Edwardian period.
