This stunning lithograph depicts a Douglas squirrel, Tamiasciurus douglasii, also known as the Douglas pine squirrel or the agile squirrel, in its natural habitat. The image is plate 27 from "The Viviparous Quadrupeds of North America," a groundbreaking work by naturalists John James Audubon (1785-1851) and John Bachman (1790-1874), published in two volumes between 1843 and 1845. The Douglas squirrel is shown in the act of feeding on a pine cone, its bushy tail curled around a branch for balance as it climbs deftly up the tree. The intricate details of the squirrel's long, thick fur, its alert and curious expression, and the textured bark of the pine tree are all beautifully rendered in this nineteenth-century illustration. The Douglas squirrel is a native of the western United States and Canada, and is a member of the family Sciuridae, the largest family of rodents. It is a placental mammal, belonging to the order Eutheria, and is characterized by its fur, which covers its entire body, and its ability to give birth to live young instead of laying eggs. The Douglas squirrel is an agile and adaptable creature, able to climb trees with ease and store large quantities of nuts and seeds in hidden caches for the winter months.
