A Sydney Larrikin

A Sydney Larrikin. Larrikinism is the name given to the Australian folk tradition of irreverence, mockery of authority and disregard for rigid norms of propriety. Larrikinism can also be associated with self-deprecating humour. According to the Macquarie Dictionary, larrikin has two main uses: " a lout, a hoodlum" and " a mischievous young person". This Phil May caricature is the perfect illustration of this description. His trousers seem to pre-date 1960s/70s fashion by a cool 70-odd years!! Date: 1892

EDITORS COMMENTS
This caricature, titled 'Phil', is a brilliant illustration of the Australian folk tradition known as Larrikinism, which emerged in the late 19th century. Larrikinism embodies irreverence, mockery of authority, and a disregard for rigid norms of propriety. The subject of this sketch, with his mischievous grin and unconventional attire, perfectly encapsulates the spirit of this Australian tradition. Dating back to 1892, this portrait by an unknown artist showcases a young man dressed in flared trousers that seem to pre-date the 1960s/70s fashion trend by an impressive 70 years. His hat, adorned with corks, adds to his unconventional appearance. The Larrikin is depicted smoking a pipe, further emphasizing his disregard for societal norms. The term 'Larrikin' has two main uses in the Australian vernacular: 'a lout, a hoodlum' and 'a mischievous young person'. This caricature can be interpreted as both - the Larrikin's irreverent demeanor and self-deprecating humor contrast sharply with the formal portraits of the time. This image, with its historical significance, is a fascinating glimpse into the past and offers a unique insight into the Australian cultural tradition of Larrikinism. The drawing's intricate details and the subject's expressive face make it a captivating work of art that continues to intrigue and inspire.
