EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisitely hand-colored botanical copperplate engraving, taken from Joshua Hamilton's Culpeper's English Family Physician; or Medical Herbal, published in London in 1792, showcases four distinct plants: Sweet Chamomile (Matricaria recutita), Stinking Mayweed (Anthemis arvensis), Corn Chamomile (Chamaemelum nobile), and Oxeye (Chamomilla recutita). The intricate details of each plant's structure are beautifully rendered, with delicate petals, veined leaves, and prominent seeds captured in meticulous detail. Sweet Chamomile, also known as German Chamomile, is a daisy-like plant with white or yellow flowers and a sweet, apple-like scent. It has long been used in traditional medicine for its calming properties and to aid digestion. Stinking Mayweed, on the other hand, bears yellow flowers with a pungent, unpleasant odor, earning it its common name. Despite its unappealing scent, it was also used medicinally for various ailments, including wounds and skin irritations. Corn Chamomile, or Cornflower, is a bright blue flower with a white center and a distinctive, flat seed head. It was used in traditional medicine for its anti-inflammatory properties and to promote sweating. Oxeye, or Common Chamomile, is another daisy-like plant with white or yellow flowers and a slightly bitter, apple-like taste. It was used for various medicinal purposes, including as a digestive aid and to treat skin conditions. This botanical engraving provides a fascinating glimpse into the rich history of herbal medicine and the intricate details of these plants, which continue to be appreciated for their beauty and medicinal properties today.
