This evocative photograph captures the intensity and desperation of the Suvla Evacuation during the Gallipoli Campaign of World War I. Dated 1915, the image depicts British and Anzac soldiers and sailors transporting guns and personnel from Suvla Point, Turkey, on rafts in daylight. The evacuation, which took place between December 1915 and January 1916, was a crucial turning point in the eight-month-long military campaign. The Dardanelles, a narrow strait connecting the Aegean Sea to the Sea of Marmara, had been a strategic objective for the Allies since the beginning of the war. The failed attempt to force the straits and capture Constantinople (now Istanbul) led to the costly and bloody Battle of Gallipoli. By late 1915, it became clear that the Allied forces could not hold their positions, and a withdrawal was necessary. The evacuation was a complex and dangerous operation, with troops and supplies transported under cover of darkness to avoid detection by the Turkish forces. However, during the day, the evacuation of heavy artillery and equipment, such as the guns seen in this photograph, required the use of rafts and other makeshift watercraft. The soldiers and sailors worked tirelessly to ferry the guns across the narrow strait, often under heavy fire.
