EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisitely hand-colored steel engraving depicts the Sumatran Green Pigeon, Treron oxyurus, a Near Threatened avian species native to the tropical rainforests of Sumatra, Indonesia. The image was created by the renowned Scottish engraver William Lizars, working from an original illustration by the celebrated English artist Edward Lear. The engraving is taken from Prideaux John Selby's volume "Pigeons" in Sir William Jardine's Naturalist's Library: Ornithology, published in Edinburgh by W.H. Lizars in 1835. The Sumatran Green Pigeon, also known as the Sharp-tailed Vinago or Vinago oxyura, is a medium-sized, bright green pigeon with a distinctive sharp, black tail. This elegant bird is found primarily in the lowlands and hill forests of Sumatra, and feeds mainly on fruits and seeds. The Sumatran Green Pigeon was first described scientifically in 1822 by Coenraad Jacob Temminck and was named Treron oxyurus, with "Treron" meaning "turtle dove" and "oxyurus" meaning "sharp-tailed." This engraving captures the bird's natural beauty and intricate details, providing a window into the natural history of Sumatra over 180 years ago. Edward Lear, the illustrator, was a prolific artist and writer, best known for his literary nonsense and limericks. His illustrations for Selby's work were among his earliest and most significant contributions to ornithological art. William Lizars, the engraver, was a master of the steel engraving technique, which allowed for great detail and precision in the final image. Together, their collaborative work showcases the Sumatran Green Pigeon in all its splendor, highlighting the importance of preserving this and other threatened species for future generations to appreciate.
