EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures the intricate details of a Sudanese Nihas, or kettle drum, dating back to 1898. Reputedly obtained from the Dervish forces during the Battle of Omdurman in the 2nd Sudan War (1896-1899), this drum holds significant historical and cultural importance. The Nihas is an essential object in Sudanese culture, symbolizing respect and social standing. The drum's heavy, beaten copper shell measures approximately 35 cm in diameter and diameter and 30 cm in height. Four pairs of bronze suspension rings encircle the rim, and below them are 38 copper pegs that secure the head. The head is made of tanned and shaved leather, possibly cowhide, with the smooth top contrasting the traces of hair remaining on the sides. The head is perforated around the side to fit over the pegs on the shell. A twisted leather cord passes through eight holes in the edge of the head, forming four V-shaped tensioning cords that join at a ring underneath the shell. The drum's intricate design and construction reflect the skill and craftsmanship of the Sudanese artisans who created it. The Battle of Omdurman marked the end of the Mahdist State and the Sudanese resistance against British rule. This Nihas serves as a poignant reminder of the rich cultural heritage that was present in Sudan during that era. The Battle of Omdurman took place on September 2, 1898, near the city of Omdurman, Sudan. The British, led by General Horatio Kitchener, faced the Dervish forces led by the Mahdi's successor, Abdallahi ibn Muhammad. The battle resulted in a decisive victory for the British, marking the end of the Mahdist State and the beginning of British rule in Sudan. This Nihas is a testament to the cultural significance of the conflict and the resilience of the Sudanese people.
