EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning handcolored copperplate stipple engraving, published by F. G. Levrault between 1816 and 1830, showcases two intriguing underwater creatures: the Striped Weever, Trachinus lineolatus, and the Ling, Lota vulgaris. The illustration, directed by Turpin and engraved by Massard with colors added by a skilled hand, was created by the renowned French natural history painter, Jean Gabriel Pretre (1780-1845). Pretre began his career as a painter of natural history at Empress Josephine's zoo and later became an artist at the Museum of Natural History. In this image, he masterfully captures the unique features of both fish species. The Striped Weever, also known as the Lineated Weever or Hippolyte Cloquet, is a venomous bottom-dwelling fish with distinctive vertical stripes and a long, slender body. The Ling, or European Ling, is a flatfish with a mottled brown coloration and a large head. The intricate detail and lifelike quality of this engraving are a testament to the exceptional craftsmanship of the time. The stipple technique, which involves applying tiny dots of ink to create shading and texture, adds depth and dimension to the image. This beautiful and historically significant print invites us to explore the rich biodiversity of the ocean and appreciate the artistry of the past.
