Stoodley Pike, a historic obelisk situated atop the moors above the picturesque town of Todmorden in Lancashire, England, stands proudly against the west Yorkshire skyline. This iconic landmark, which dominates the surrounding landscape, was originally built in 1814 as a tribute to the British victory over Napoleon Bonaparte and the subsequent surrender of Paris. The monument, which once reached a height of 142 feet, was unfortunately destroyed by lightning in 1854. In this circa 1910 photograph, a group of chaps are seen sitting at the base of the obelisk's replacement, taking a break from their day's activities and enjoying the breathtaking view. The monument, which remains an important part of local history and heritage, continues to draw visitors from near and far, inviting them to reflect on the past and appreciate the beauty of the natural surroundings.
