Starry Gazey Pie, Ship Inn, Mousehole, Cornwall

A mouthwatering example of a Starry Gazey Pie, served up on Tom Bawcocks Eve (23 December) at Mousehole in Cornwall. The dish, with fish heads and tails sticking out of it, is unique to Mousehole, and is prepared at the Ship Inn there. According to legend, the town had no fish because of stormy weather, so two days before Christmas a local fisherman, Tom Bawcock, went out in a storm and came back with seven different types of fish. Seen here is a man dressed up as Tom Bawcock, with a false beard, with landlord, landlady and pub customers, no doubt all looking forward to sampling the pie. Date: circa 1980s

Starry Gazey Pie: A Cornish Culinary Tradition at The Ship Inn, Mousehole This mouthwatering photograph showcases a classic Starry Gazey Pie, a unique and savory dish that has been a beloved tradition in the quaint fishing village of Mousehole, Cornwall, since the 16th century. The pie, prepared annually on Tom Bawcock's Eve, which falls on December 23rd, is a testament to the resourcefulness and creativity of the local community. The pie's distinctive appearance features fish heads and tails sticking out of the golden, flaky crust. According to legend, during a particularly stormy period, the town of Mousehole was left with no fish to sustain its residents. In an act of bravery, a local fisherman named Tom Bawcock braved the treacherous waters and returned with an impressive catch of seven different types of fish. To honor Tom's heroism, the villagers created this dish using every part of the fish, ensuring nothing went to waste. The pie is prepared at The Ship Inn, a charming pub located in the heart of Mousehole. In this image, a man dressed as Tom Bawcock, complete with a false beard, stands proudly alongside the landlord, landlady, and customers, all eagerly anticipating the arrival of the pie. The dish is baked to perfection, with a generous helping of parsley garnishing the top, adding a delightful aroma and burst of freshness to the dish. This photograph captures the essence of a cherished Cornish culinary tradition, as well as the camaraderie and community spirit that surrounds the annual Tom Bawcock's Eve celebration.
