EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisitely detailed hand-colored copperplate stipple engraving, taken from Jussieus Dictionary of Natural Science published in Florence, Italy in 1837, showcases two fascinating marine creatures: the Spiny Lobster, Panulirus homarus, and the Mantis Shrimp, Squilla mantis. The illustration, created by the skilled hand of Jean Gabriel Pretre and expertly engraved by Cignozzi under the direction of Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin, provides a stunningly accurate representation of these marine inhabitants. The Spiny Lobster, depicted on the left, is a large, armored crustacean with distinctive antennae and long, sharp spines along the length of its body. This nocturnal creature is well-known for its ability to camouflage itself by changing color to blend in with its surroundings. A popular delicacy in many parts of the world, the Spiny Lobster is an essential component of various marine ecosystems. On the right, the Mantis Shrimp, or Squilla mantis, is a unique and intriguing crustacean. With its distinctive, elongated raptorial claws, this shrimp is an expert hunter, able to deliver powerful strikes to immobilize its prey. The Mantis Shrimp's colorful exoskeleton and complex eyes, which are capable of detecting multiple polarized light wavelengths, make it one of the most visually striking creatures in the ocean. This image not only serves as a testament to the artistic and scientific achievements of the 19th century but also offers a glimpse into the rich biodiversity of the marine world. The intricate details of the engraving bring these remarkable creatures to life, transporting us to the depths of the ocean and inviting us to explore the wonders of the natural world.
