The brutal battle for this area, which began on July 15, 1916, during the larger Battle of the Somme, lasted for 12 days and resulted in heavy casualties for both sides. The fierce fighting earned Delville Wood its new name among the troops, who came to know it as 'Devils Wood.' The South African Brigade, part of the British Expeditionary Force, played a crucial role in the capture of Delville Wood. The illustration captures the determination and resilience of these soldiers as they advance through the dense, tangled undergrowth, with the aid of their Scottish comrades. The woodland, once a peaceful and serene environment, had been transformed into a deadly battleground, with the trees becoming a deadly maze for the soldiers as they tried to navigate their way through.
