Biplane Biplanes Camel Sopwith Tiger Turret Turrets

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures the essence of aviation history during the First World War, as a Sopwith 2F Camel fighter plane is poised for takeoff from the launching platform of HMS Tiger's X turret. The Sopwith 2F Camel, designed specifically for naval use, was the first of its kind to be completed and flying by March 1917. Equipped with a nose-mounted Vickers gun and an overwing Lewis gun, this agile biplane was a formidable addition to the British naval fleet. Deployed around the North Sea and on both sides of the English Channel, the Sopwith 2F Camel could be launched from battleship and battle cruiser main turrets, as well as from aircraft carriers. The image showcases serial number N 6797, nestled in its launching cradle on the turret of HMS Tiger. The date of this photograph is estimated to be between 1917 and 1918. The black smoke billowing from the plane's exhaust adds a sense of urgency and intensity to the scene, as the pilot prepares for a mission over the turbulent skies of the war. The Sopwith 2F Camel's distinctive biplane design, with its narrow wings and open cockpit, is a testament to the ingenuity and innovation of the early aviation industry. This photograph is a poignant reminder of the pivotal role that aviation played during the First World War and the brave men and women who risked their lives to protect their countries.
