EDITORS COMMENTS
This poignant image is taken from the sketchbook of 240455 Private George Barrow, a soldier in the 6th Battalion of the Oxford & Bucks Light Infantry, formerly serving in the Royal Berkshire Regiment. Born in Bermondsey, London, George enlisted in Camberwell and lived in Kennington before being called to active service during World War I. The date of this particular sketch is 1916. Private Barrow's sketchbook offers a unique and personal insight into the daily life of a soldier during wartime. In this image, we see George intently focused on his writing, likely penning a letter to his loved ones back home. The worn uniform, complete with cap and coat, is a stark reminder of the harsh conditions and long hours endured by soldiers during this period. Sadly, George's story did not have a happy ending. He lost his life on active service on August 31, 1917. His final resting place is at the Mendinghem Military Cemetery in Poperinge, West-Flaanderen, Belgium. His grave is marked with the reference Va14. This poignant sketch, along with the accompanying historical details, offers a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by soldiers during the First World War. It serves as a testament to the human spirit and the enduring bonds of love and connection, even in the most challenging of circumstances.
