EDITORS COMMENTS
The Five Sisters: A Glimpse into Northern Ireland's Prehistoric Past This photograph offers an eye-level view of The Five Sisters, a mesmerizing prehistoric stone circle located in Comber, County Down, Northern Ireland. Dating back to the Neolithic or Bronze Age, this ancient monument is believed to have been erected around 3,000 to 4,000 years ago. The Five Sisters, also known as the Comber Stone Circle, consists of five large, granite stones arranged in a circular formation, with each stone standing approximately 1.5 meters high. The stones are believed to have been transported from the Mourne Mountains, a distance of around 12 kilometers, and the precise method of their transportation remains a mystery. The site is steeped in folklore and legend, with some believing that the stones were placed to mark the burial sites of five sisters who were turned to stone after being punished by the gods for dancing on the Sabbath. Others believe that the stones were used as astronomical markers, aligning with the solstices and equinoxes. This photograph, taken in the early 1900s, offers a rare glimpse into the past, transporting us back in time to a world where ancient rituals and traditions held great significance. The Five Sisters continue to captivate and inspire visitors to this day, standing as a testament to the rich cultural heritage of Northern Ireland.
