Despite his best efforts to prevent war, Grey ultimately found himself leading Britain into the First World War. He continued in his role as Foreign Secretary until the end of the conflict in 1916, when he was replaced by Arthur Balfour. Grey was later created a Viscount in 1916, and continued to serve in various political roles until his retirement in 1922.
