1. Title: Sir Edward Carson, K.C. (ca. 1900) Sir Edward Carson, K.C. (Kings Counsel), was a prominent Irish Unionist politician and lawyer who played a significant role in British politics during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. This three-quarter length portrait, taken around the turn of the century, showcases Sir Edward Carson's distinguished appearance and intellectual prowess. Born on December 1, 1854, in Belfast, Northern Ireland, Carson studied law at Queen's University Belfast and was called to the bar at the Inner Temple in London in 1880. He quickly established a successful legal practice and was appointed as a Queen's Counsel (K.C.) in 1895. However, Carson's political career began in earnest when he was elected as the Member of Parliament (MP) for Trinity College, Dublin, in 1892. Carson is best known for his role in the Ulster Unionist Campaign against Home Rule for Ireland, which sought to establish an Irish parliament separate from the British Parliament. He famously led the Ulster Volunteers, a paramilitary organization, in opposition to the proposed Home Rule legislation. The crisis culminated in the Ulster Covenant, a mass petition signed by over 470,000 people, and the subsequent Gun-Running Scandal of 1905. Despite his controversial political stance, Sir Edward Carson's oratory skills and legal expertise earned him respect from both sides of the Irish divide. He continued to serve as an MP until his retirement in 1921. Sir Edward Carson passed away on October 22, 1935, leaving behind a complex and enduring legacy in Irish and British history. This photograph, taken around the time of his political peak, captures the intensity and determination of a man who dedicated his life to shaping the future of Ireland and the United Kingdom.
